Join the Bacchus Bistro folks every Monday evening, 7-9 pm at Sips.

Because in the New Year — the second decade of the new millennium — it’s back-to-school for wannabe grape groupies who need to know about wines…where they come from, how they’re harvested and fermented, and how to develop your nose and palate to appreciate them.

The sipping school is the brainchild of Spinnaker’s Product Consultant and wine afficianado, Larry Arnold — and the first session begins with ripsnorting reds!

Starting Date: Monday, January 18, 2010 – Time: 7-9 pm

Cost: $25/session

Welcome To The Wonders of Whisky

Forget about wine tastings this week. Treat yourself instead to the wonders of whisky instead. In fact, why not mosey on over to Sips Artisan Bistro and enjoy a lovey liquid lunch!

WHERE: SIPS Artisan Bistro, 425 Simcoe Street (in James Bay Square)

WHEN:  Wednesday, October 28 – 12 noon to 2 pm

Hosted by Larry Arnold, Wine and Spirits Product Consultant for Spinnakers, this will be a great opportunity to meet Gerry Tosh, recent recipient of the Whisky Ambassador of the Year award, and a rather fine occasion to tantalize your tastebuds with "Highland Park 12, 15, 18 & 30" as well as the "Famous Grouse" and new "Black Grouse" whisky!

It’s truly amazing what can be done with a bit of barley, water and yeast in a barrel. For those who have trouble tickling their tongue or tastebuds, they can always go to Plan B – tickling their ribs. And what better way to tickle yourself pink than to sip something special, while you get into the spunky spirit of things!

“Always carry a large flagon of whisky in case of snakebite and furthermore always carry a small snake.” (W.C. Fields)

May the enemies of Ireland never eat bread nor drink whiskey, but be tormented with itching without benefit of scratching.” (Irish toast)

“Anybody who hates dogs and loves whisky can’t be all bad.” (W.C. Fields)

"I love to sing, and I love to drink scotch. Most people would rather hear me drink scotch." (George Burns)

"Whisky is liquid sunshine." (George Bernard Shaw)

“There are two things a Highlander likes naked, and one of them is malt whisky.”
(Scottish proverb)

"The water was not fit to drink. To make it palatable, we had to drink whisky. By diligent effort, I learnt to like it." (Sir Winston Churchill)

James Bay, Victoria, British Columbia often plays host to a number of high-profile marathon events which attract hundreds of eager participants, not to mention crowds lining the route.

This fall, several key running events are being organized to take advantage of the superb vistas along the route and challenge the skill and stamina of the participants.

The Terry Fox Run (the 29th annual cancer research fundraiser) will be held Sunday, September 13 starting at 9:00 am at the Mile Zero monument in honor of the young Coquitlam man who, embodying the indomitable spirit of youth against adversity, took up the fight against cancer by attempting to run across Canada on his artificial leg in 1980.

Last year more than 500 participants ran, walked or bike in the scenic Victoria run along Dallas Road and raised almost $19,000 for cancer research, a disease which claimed late his life. This year, participants will warm up to music before they step out onto the pavement, pace themselves and cross the finish line with pledge forms in hand!

On Sunday, October 11, James Bay will also be the site of 30th Annual Royal Victoria Marathon. Organizers announced on September 10 that the Marathon, Half Marathon, 8K Road Race, and the THRIFTY FOODS Kids Marathon – Kids run has seen a 56 per cent increase over last year with the same time last year, with more than 9,500 registrations received to date.

A certified Boston Marathon qualifier, and a host event for the 2009 Provincial Marathon Championships for junior, senior, and master runners, for both men and women. This event touts $26,000 in prizes with $3,000 each to be awarded to the top male and female runner and a $5,000 bonus for a new male or female course record. Three years ago, Steve Osaduik, broke a 25-year record by winning the coveted Royal Victoria Marathon in 2 hours, 16 minutes and 49 seconds.

And, on Friday, October 30, 2009 the eyes of the world will be on Victoria, B.C. as the Olympic flame lit by the rays of the sun in Olympia, Greece travels from the Athens to the capital of British Columbia, the first leg of the nation-wide 2010 Winter Olympics Torch Relay.

This Olympic Torch Relay Celebration, a once-in-a-lifetime event will take place in the city’s crown jewel – its stunning Inner Harbour, and set against a backdrop of the historic Legislative buildings situated in James Bay and the grand Fairmont Empress Hotel. This event will feature a kaleidoscope of colour, energy and light in a magnificent multidisciplinary multicultural spectacle that will impress everyone, from the relay runners to the assembled dignitaries and enthusiastic members of the public.
