As a relative newcomer I am amazed at the anti-progress/anti-business sentiment here. Here is what I see currently:

1) The Blue Bridge debacle.
2) 5 separate police services within a 40km radius.
3) No sewage treatment. Once in place we will really see taxes go up.
4) The city getting into the housing business by purchasing Motels. I think we know how this will turn out.
5) City officials flip-flop on the Marina project and risk a very legitimate lawsuit.

Victoria is poorly managed and needs a political flushing. Property taxes are increasing at almost double the rate of inflation. How long will residents put up with this before replacing the existing council?

The Irving house now stands on Government street between Michigan and Superior. It is known as Abbeyfield and is a seniors care home.

Great article!

One thing - "In 1981, the Irvings were the talk of the town again with their new phaeton carriage, built to order for the captain’s wife." Shouldn't that be "In 1881" ?

Hi Victoria, good article, I like your website, nice talking to you today at Ogden Point docks. Apparently the speculation is that these migrants are members of the Tamil Tigers.
