James Bay Motorists Get Gas Break

January 28, 2010 by admin

Victoria motorists, including those living in the James Bay neighborhood got a gas break yesterday — below $1.00 a litre.

Our local gas station located at 308 Menzies Street (t: 250.383.3612) posted 97.9 cents a litre for regular gas, a drop of 4.9 cents than the previous day.

Of course if you want to keep an eye of fares for fuel, you should probably check out Victoria Gas Prices. Aren’t you lucky you don’t live in Labrador City, Newfoundland & Labrador where the price at the pump reached $1.203/litre this week. Of course ex-patriots from Alberta who’ve flocked to Victoria to escape the rigors of the cold climate in winter, dearly miss the lowest gas prices in the country now — 88.9 cents a litre in Edmonton and Lloydminster!

It seems that crude il prices are likely to grow slowly and steadily as the global economy improves. The current recession has however reduced demand for gas, while we are experiencing a surplus in refining capacity. Inventories of wholesale gas appear to be strong suggesting that we may see some price stability at least over the spring period which should lift the spirit of drivers sorely in need of some upbeat news!

Now if you’re like Maxine, the mad maven in illustration above, you might want contact our City Councillor – Pam Madoff (City Hall Tel: 250.361.0221 or Home Tel: 250.384.6971) or the City Engineering Department (Tel: 250.361.0400) to request that they fill in the potholes and pave the streets properly so that we may enjoy a quality of life befitting those who live in the city’s oldest neighborhood. Remember, paradise is but a phone call away!

Public Perspective Sought on the Capital Regional District’s Growth Strategy

The Capital Regional District (CRD), established in 1966, is a federation of 13 muncipalities comprised of Central Saanich, Colwood, Esquimalt, Highlands, Langford, Metchosin, North Saanich, Oak Bay, Saanich, Sidney, Sooke, Victoria, and View Royal, plus three electoral areas including Juan de Fuca, Southern Gulf Islands, and Salt Spring Island.

The CRD is conducting a public consultation forum here in James Bay on Thursday, February 4, 2010 to gather views on what individuals think makes a livable and sustainable region.

Designed as an interactive event, (using MetroQuest’s innovative planning tool), participants will have a hand in shaping the future of the region which is home to approximately 350,000 people.

Whether individuals wish to attend this session in person or participate online, they will have a chance to “vote” on options for managing regional issues such as transportation, housing, and future growth locations.

This might well be of interest to those who are looking for effective ways to gather feedback from residents on issues such as transportation and housing, as well as amenities and services for the City of Victoria as well James Bay both of which will be updating their Official Community Plans in the near future.

Those interested in obtaining additional information or registering for this session, please visit the CRD Regional Planning website at www.crd.bc.ca/rgs.

Great Books to Read for the New Year

My fellow insects,

I hope you all had a good Christmas holiday and a jolly New Year; I was in bed by 10:45 p.m. with a good book, and what a book……

Sashenka by Simon Montefiore

……… this is a big, sweeping, romantic adventure of half a century of turbulent Russian history. It is the story of a young girl living in St Petersburg who at the age of 16 becomes a Bolshevik revolutionary during the reign of the Czar in 1916. She has to be ‘bought’ out of jail by her father, the head of a wealthy family, but she continues to help the Bolsheviks, as her mother parties with Rasputin and her other friends. Sashenka marries and has two, children, but then embarks on a love affair that has dreadful consequences. The final part of the book takes place with the third generation in 1994 when a young historian eventually manages to get into the Stalin archives and unravels a horrendous story of betrayal and savage cruelty, but with an ending to the story that will stay with you for a long time.

All through the book, the background details of life in Russia at the time of the Czars and on through the revolution, right up to the collapse of communism, simply add to the enjoyment of Simon Montefiore’s fine writing. For those of you who do not know his work, he has had great success with his two outstanding biographies of Stalin and this is one of the main reasons for the authenticity of this, his first piece of historical fiction. When writing Sashenka, he used a lot of his research work from the Stalin books.

For lovers of historical fiction, and for those of you who, like me, like to learn more history through this fascinating medium – after all, he is a renowned historian – I cannot recommend this book strongly enough. Magnificent.

Corsair by Tim Severin

You may remember that back in October I recommended a book called White Gold by Giles Milton, a wonderful history of the white slave trade to Africa in the late 1600’s. Well, this is a fascinating piece of historical fiction which is centred around the same period in history.

Set in the late 1600’s, Corsair is the story of an Irish young man, Hector Lynch and his sister Elizabeth who are living in a village on the south coast of Ireland when they are both taken by Barbary corsairs and sold at auction in Algiers. At the time of their capture, the Slaves are separated by gender and, after converting to Islam to avoid the worst of the horrors of the slave trade, Hector and another slave, Dan, a Miskito Indian from the Caribbean who has become a friend, have to survive adventures peopled by a series of ferocious historical characters, by their quick witted actions as they become embroiled in the Mediterranean naval wars.

Hecctor’s main concern is the whereabouts of his sister and it is this need that drives him on through shipwrecks and, having escaped from the African slave trade, being re enslaved by French Christians. He eventually finds out the awful truth about what has happened to his sister when he is shipwrecked off the coast of Morocco.

Being written by another well known historian, this book will intrigue you, not only by its story, but also by the meticulous research that has gone into defining the extraordinary characters who are featured all through the book, from a power-crazed sultan through sadistic seamen to fanatical members of the Christian Knightly Orders. Be sure to read the historical notes that Tim Severin provides at the end of this excellent book.

Happy Birthday to Sassy Seagoats!

January 12, 2010 by admin
Filed under Fun, Horoscopes, Main Content

2010 has already begun and all our snickering sun signs want to know what’s store for them?

2010 is the "Year of the Tiger", according to the Chinese astrological calendar. And if you don’t usually hang out with a Tiger unless you’re watching the golf channel, then maybe you’d like to celebrate 2010 "International Year of Communications", "International Year for the Rapprochment of Cultures", "International Year of Biodiversity", or "International Year of the Nurse".

And a very big Happy Birthday to all you Crazy Capricorns who love colorful food, presents wrapped in magical paper, and membership in exclusive clubs. But, whatever you do, never accuse them of being untidy, make them feel useless, or embarrass them in public or you may live to regret ever having encountered this rather ripsnorting ruminant!

ARIES (21 March – 19 April)
You’ll need all the help you can get this year. Your best bet is to grab a tiger by the tail. On the other hand, maybe a stuffed pussy cat is a whole lot safer for a ram like you. Failing that, you could take up knitting, (along with 60 million other Americans), and learn how to do the subversive cross-stitch not to mention make nice nose or willie warmers.

TAURUS (20 April – 20 May)
This is your year to shine in the fast lane of life. Your best bet is to forget about munching grass on the golf course this year. Frankly, you really don’t want to mess with a tee’d off Tiger do you? Why not befriend a Whatnottian Warthog, NowWhattian Boghog, or a Wassup Wunderkin — blessed be diversity! "

GEMINI (21 May – 20 June)
Since you have an insatiable curiosity about everything, and adore getting your fingers into all manner of strange things, why not explore far-flung places like the "Restaurant At The End Of The Universe" which is featuring Ripsnorting Roadkill this month – barbecued boghogs or Perfectly Normal Beasts…large charging sort of animals, a bit like cows, bulls or buffalos that are perfectly safe to swallow.

CANCER (21 June – 22 July)
Being a crab in the "Year of the Tiger" is a pretty scary thing as you’re most likely to be consumed by this crafty critter for breakfast, lunch or dinner. That’s the good news. The bad news is that you could end up being featured in next month’s Ripsnorting Roadkill menu at the "Restaurant At The End Of The Universe". At least learn to pray for your salvation, The Big Bopper may take pity on you.

LEO (23 July – 22 August)
Being in the limelight and showing off is right up your alley, along with complaining about not getting enough strokes from funny folks. But this year is different, you’ll have to take a backseat to a sometimes surly if not striped species. What do you mean you don’t want to share the stage with Tony the Tiger? Have another bowl of frosted flakes and kindly shut up!

VIRGO (23 August – 22 September)
Being an earthy sort, you’re going to get along just fine with all tigers running around on your back forty this year. Who better than you to organize a terrific Tiger Tooth party. Don’t forget to invite all the Eyore eyesores and William wet-blankets you know, your guest of honor will enjoy the opportunity to feast upon them.

LIBRA (23 September – 22 October)
Being the "windbag of the universe" has certain advantages, and this year is no exception. This is an excellent time to write a profound "Think and Do Book" in honor of the Tiger…yes, that truculent toed type whom you would like to banish to the nearest zoo. Suck it up, show some tact, and say something nice for change airhead!

SCORPIO (23 October – 21 November)
The good news this year is that astronomers have finally recognized that all the problems of the universe can be laid squarely at the feet of Pluto, the powerhouse behind your sassy sun sign. The bad news is that since the Easter Bunny and Great Pumpkin are on holidays this year, you’re pretty much on your own…up shit creek without a paddle or a canoe and a damn tiger on your tail!

SAGITTARIUS (21 November – 22 December)
Besides boring barnyard animals with your endless stream of questions, you also have a knack for fluffing the punchline of jokes which will, unfortunately, not endear you to the star of this year’s barnyard birthday party, the Tiger. Toss your tactless traits and cutting sarcasm, and share your favorite teddy bear, beer or blanket with a Tiger for pity’s sake!

CAPRICORN (22 December – 19 January)
Thank goodness this birthday babe or boy has harmonious relationships with heffalumps. However the same cannot be said of Tigers. The bad news is your slave-driving, status-seeking seagoat behavior, not to mention your tendency to believe that your way is always the best is likely to offend the Tiger…and you don’t want that do you!

AQUARIUS (20 January – 18 February)
You’re going to have to expand your friendships this year beyond the ususal water-carrier wet-blankets who gather around you. Being a fixed air sign of the zodiac, you’re prone to paragliding and paradiddling when the spirit moves you. Beware of wayward winds emanating from feistry, four-legged furry things with stripes, they can be deadly!

James Bay Then & Now – January 2010

Oh, to be Young again…

By Danda Humphreys

Street names in Victoria can make us smile. Who wouldn’t want to be Young again, now that the New Year is here?

Young Street runs between Toronto and Michigan streets on the east side of James Bay. During the 12 years that he lived here, William Alexander George Young made quite an impression on the citizens of this town.

Young was born in England in 1827, the son of a captain in the Royal Navy. Following in his father’s footsteps, he enlisted at the tender age of 14, and worked his way up through the ranks. He was decorated for his services during the Crimean War, then moved to the Foreign Office and became secretary to the newly organized North American Boundary Commission.

He arrived in Victoria in June 1857 and made a favourable impression on his new boss, James Douglas, Chief Factor at the Hudson’s Bay Company headquarters. Douglas, who recognized a bright young fellow when he saw one, wasted no time in persuading him to stay. There wasn’t much social life at Fort Victoria, but naval officers were always welcome, and before long the new arrival was courting the Governor’s pretty young niece.

Eliza Cowan was the daughter of Douglas’s sister Cecelia. Eliza lived with her parents at “Belmont,” a large estate on Esquimalt Harbour. In 1858, three events conspired to create huge changes in the family’s fortunes: Goldseekers poured into Victoria en route to the Fraser River; Eliza’s mother died; and Eliza became the wife of the efficient young administrator who had become her Uncle James’s “right-hand man.” The Youngs set up residence on Superior Street, not far from the Douglas family home.

Shortly afterwards, Douglas appointed Young colonial secretary for British Columbia. Douglas’s duties took him away more often, and he was only too pleased to leave his son-in-law in charge.

Administrative responsibilities in two colonies gave Young considerable authority – and a salary from both. He invested his money wisely, purchased real estate in Esquimalt and up-Island, and campaigned successfully for membership in the Legislative Assembly.

When Douglas retired, in 1864, Young took a one-year leave of absence for a trip to England. On his return, in 1865, he found British Columbia in deep financial trouble. Then he fell afoul of mainland governor Frederick Seymour, who confided to the British government that the Victoria-based Young did not inspire his confidence in connection with mainland interests. Young was replaced.

In May 1869, the Youngs auctioned off most of their possessions and sailed for England. There, Young was knighted by Queen Victoria, then appointed Governor of British Guiana. He died in Accra, in 1885, without ever returning to these shores. But luckily for us, his story stays with us, thanks to that short street in James Bay.

Feel Superior at The Superior

For the third in our four-part “Victoria’s Secret” series, ’twas a damp, overcast Wednesday night when your Hedonista and Ronaldo  – a.k.a. “Cornichon” – bedecked in vintage attire and traipsed over to The Superior, jonesin’ to catch a film noir flick.

Although naught but a few blocks from the main tourist attractions of Victoria – the Fairmont Empress, the Royal British Columbia Museum, the British Columbia Parliament Buildings, the Pacific Undersea Gardens, the Royal London Wax Museum, and the Hotel Grand Pacific – lies the lovely neighbourhood of James Bay. Located on the south side of Inner Harbour, James Bay is a rare jewel: it makes up the oldest residential neighbourhood (north of San Francisco) on the North American West Coast. It is here that we found yet another treasure….

Cosmopolitan, Superior style: white, served up in front of a black & white film.

Cosmopolitan, Superior style: white, by candlelight, before an ol’ black & white….

HEDONISTA: Ever since I first tried this wonderfully whimsical  place, I’m now happy to say that I’m as close to a regular as one who now lives in Seattle can be. A small plates eatery with a focus on small local food producers and BC beer and wine, The Superior supports local artists and musicians. From the peaceful patio to the always-interesting interior, The Superior – which opened in October 2005 – is all about the ambiance. In fact, the entire restaurant serves as owner Lisa Boehme’s own personal canvas, which she redesigns seasonally (or whenever the mood takes her). Her goal as an artist and visionary: to challenge people to think outside of the box, to change the way one thinks and, by doing so, to make the world a better place.

Mmmmm ... root chips, served up with a yummy sweet chili aioli sauce.

Mmmmm … root chips, served up with a yummy sweet chili aioli sauce. Just one of their tasty small plates.

Much like the interior and exterior, the menu at The Superior Café is also a blank canvas; for, here, art is food and food is art. Not over the top, mind you – just good, creative-yet-simple small bites served up with an artistic eye. They do weekend brunches (10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.) and evening meals Tuesday through Sunday (5:00 p.m. ’til “late”). (They don’t currently do lunches.) They do offer a “soup of the moment.” And their menu changes up weekly. In the evenings they host art and cultural events, be they movies, music, or even dating games.

That night – in my crushed black velvet dress, black stockings and patent leather Mary Jane-heeled shoes tied with black ribbons – we enjoyed the 1941 flick The Maltese Falcon – complemented by their version of a Cosmopolitan, sans rose: white cranberry juice, cointreau & vodka, served up with a lime wedge. Very nice – think gin & tonic meets lemonade…. Their noshies are very pleasant – their root chips, for example, get on like a house on fire with their beer, wine, and spirits  … not to mention their film noir (think a creatively classy alternative to the traditional movie fare of potato chips and popcorn).

Lisa Boehme of The Superior instills art into the everyday.

Lisa Boehme of The Superior. Ever-smiling, she gives to her diners the gifts of unique and positive experiences that become memories to keep and treasure. She instills art into the everyday.

RONALDO: Film Noir night at a cafe just off the Inner Harbour called The Superior. Film noir as in Bogie. It’s been almost three-score years and ten since the great writer-director John Huston and his gang of players (Bogie, Sidney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre) launched their concept: hard-driving, fast-talking, high-contrast urban adventures. Guns, dames, cigarettes, booze. Quick cuts interspersed with long, long takes. Actors who created dark characters; scripts that told a dark story.

Thus does Cornichon find himself, of a Wednesday evening, in ascot & leather jacket, watching the iconic Maltese Falcon. Best supporting actor for Greenstreet in his first movie. Bogie misquoting Shakespeare (“The stuff dreams are made of”) as the elevator takes Mary Astor away.

Lights up and The Superior’s owner, Lisa Boehme, appears. We recognize her, don’t we? From Toulouse-Lautrec’s sketches of Paris nightlife. Superior’s lofty space across from Fisherman’s Wharf Park was built as a gathering spot for under-age, off-duty seafarers; later it became a Unitarian church. Now it’s an arty restaurant, an eclectic performance venue and unofficial community center. Hundreds of shoes festoon a tree in the courtyard: a fundraiser for battered women, an expression of Lisa’s open-hearted, California-girl, earth-mother personality. There’s food and drink here nightly, as well as a popular weekend brunch. Organic, of course. A “culinary artist” named Torin Egan’s in charge of the kitchen. But the spirit of the place comes from Lisa, self-described “visionary,” who has the creativity to keep all the wheels spinning without going off the tracks.

(Want to feel Superior? Try this unique gem, and you will.)
